Pier 1 is at the edge of the Financial District so the surroundings are very typical for that type of district...lots of very tall buildings...
And also lots of coffee shops and restaurants...everything very neat and tidy...
The city was already a hustle and bustle with morning commuters and tourists...
Grabbed a coffee and headed down toward Fisherman's Wharf. The entire waterfront area was lined with piers, restaurants, marketplaces, businesses...it was really well done...
Even at 11:00 the fog was still pretty thick...but it was getting lighter by the minute...the hopes are to see the Golden Gate Bridge today...
We saw a few strange things along the way...they set this area up with unusual things that you could manipulate and watch peoples reactions?? interesting concept...one was an "s" shaped bar with movable seats...
And this was just as unusual...yes, they are moneys hanging from a metal merry-go-round type structure and when you beat on the drums as a group, they go round-and-round?....Art?...hum...
It was nice it wasn't too busy, off-season here in San Francisco...
What we did see lots of were homeless people...we knew they were homeless because they had shopping carts filled with their "lives", but what was really unsettling, was the amount of homeless who had nothing at all, wandering the bay area, going through the garbage looking for food....in their own "worlds", talking to "not sure who", dirty, but not begging...just there looking for whatever food us tourists would leave behind.........tore my heart out....
I wonder if this is why San Francisco named their football team "San Francisco 49ers???".
This place was really neat, Musee Mecanique, it's an antique arcade, full of old fashioned pin ball machines, quarter taking slot machines that feature dancing dolls ...it was great...
George played this game for a long time for 25 cents.....unheard of nowadays...
Then off to do the "touristy stuff"...
And of course more sea lions...these ones were hilarious...there were several wharfs that would have one sea lion on them...and if another would try to get on..(.they were like mischievous little boys)...they would fight to push the other one off....
Of course we had to ride the cable cars....
Bit of a scary ride....these San Francisco hills are crazy....If you walked or rode your bike in this area...you would be super super fit.....
Took the cable car downtown, or would you say uptown??....to the main shopping area.... in any case....much like most big cities we have been in...
A very nice downtown area....had an amazing lunch and then made our way to China Town....I think every city has a "China Town"...
And for some "Chinese Laundry"...we saw this lots...
Made our way back to the Ferry terminal to take the ferry back home...it was beautiful, the fog had cleared...
But by the time we were part way home, it started to fog over, the wind was blowing, and the ferry was creating a lot of mist....
So we ended our day in San Francisco, never seeing the Golden Gate Bridge because of the fog...boo-hoo, next time....so we enjoyed just clear blue skies back at our campsite...
