Made a stop at Myrtle Beach... Now this is a real tourist town if we ever saw one...for miles and miles and miles all you saw was mini golf, beach shops and restaurants that looked like this....and the beach was packed...and this is a slow time right now, I could just imagine what it looks like in peak season
We didn't stay long here, a little too busy for us...so we headed to a much quieter beach town, Garden City. We love the houses here, all different colours but almost all of them like this, raised off the ground, almost like a tree house.
Stopped for lunch and a cold one at Bubba's and tried Hushpuppies (deep fried cornbread balls)...
This is probably why we don't seem to get very far in a day...
Once we got closer to Charleston, South Carolina, we saw these roadside "Sweetgrass Basket" stands everywhere. We stopped to have a look and spoke with one of the ladies.
Sweetgrass basketmaking has been part of the Charleston and Mt. Pleasant
communities for more than 300 years. Brought to the area by slaves who
came from West Africa, basketmaking is a traditional art form which has
been passed on from generation to generation. It really is amazing, some of the baskets can take from 2 - 3 weeks to make...which would explain the price...which is why we admired them and then moved on...
Finally made it to our campsite outside of Charleston and enjoyed a beautiful sunset and the sound of the cicadas and crickets lulled us to sleep....no actually it was the air-conditioner that ran most of the night that lulled us to sleep...because without it, I am not sure what we would do..
