Drove out to St. George Island this morning. When we were crossing the bridge you could see all the fishermen, there were at least 50 boats out there..
The Island was very quaint, lighthouse, a few stores and restaurants and a great beach...but as in most tourist areas here, you have to pay for almost everything...The cost to climb the stairs up the lighthouse....$5.00 each...so we decided the view from the bottom was just fine....
Stopped at another great little town, Apalachicola, cute shops and restaurants... and thirty miles of shallow oyster beds which produce 90 percent of Florida’s oysters.
Our destination today was Destin...not Destiny...not Destination...just Destin...George thought they stopped a little short on the name but regardless, this place has some of the most amazing white sandy beaches we have ever seen...The sand is so fine, its like the sand that they use in an "hour glass". When you walk on it, it actually squeaks....it's really weird..
We found out the sand on the beaches here are some of the whitest in the world. The sand consists of small quartz particles, which were created by a process involving the Appalachian Mountains and the Apalachicola River 20,000 years ago...
We thought it was a great day to ride our bikes to the beach and were amazed at the amount of rust on them. I guess with the amount of rain we have had and the salt air...really did a number on them, got ourselves some cleaning and polishing to do on them now...
Another thing here is the crazy amount of dragonflies and butterflies....they are everywhere...We started to see them once we hit the Panhandle, we have never seen so many...
